I have had this series on my TBR for too long. I do love a good high school drama & this book delivered! This is book #1 of the English Prep series however it can also be read as a standalone.
Hayley grew up with the elite wealthy group until her father dies unexpectedly, leaving her mum with no money & no willpower to keep living. They find themselves in a trailer park & Hayley moving to the local public school where she is hated more than liked & her mum turning to, drugs. Hayley leaves her best friend; Christian behind & tries the best to start a new life. But when she is given the opportunity to do her senior year at English Prep with her old friends under a scholarship, she is ecstatic to reunite with Christian. Only to find him not wanting to have anything do with her.
Christian has grown up with money instead of parents. With his mum passed & his dad away on business trips, he finds himself having to step up & look after his younger brother, even if he is only 11 months younger than him. He is the "king" of English Prep (even if he doesn't want to be) with all his fellow students looking up to him, including watching everything he does. And when he decides he doesn't want anything to do with his ex-best friend; Hayley, everyone else decides to isolate her as well.
However as time goes on, Christian finds himself not being able to stop thinking about Hayley. Even if he doesn't want too. He finds himself pulling towards her more than he can admit. With them being best friends once upon a time, they do know each other more than anyone else which includes knowing how to push each others buttons. But with them both needing each other more than the need to hate each other, can they forget about their past & work together to keep each other safe from an outside threat?
I enjoy this story as it wasn't just a typical bully romance / enemies to lovers. It was a second chance with a mystery subplot (with a mix of mafia too!). This story was not what I thought I would be reading but I loved it either way.
4/5 stars with 3/5 steam.
It would have been a 5/5 if I thought the reason was necessary for Christian to suddenly hate Hayley. He blames her for something that was completely out of her control, when she was going her own pain at losing her father. It made me frustrated & was happy to see that Hayley made him work to gain her friendship & love back.
I have picked up the second book straight away which follows Christian's younger brother.
